3M Closet
We have been working together with Galerie Grimsel in Basel for a while and are pleased to announce a new collaboration: a new edition of the classic 3M Closet.
In 1927, the architects Otto Meier and Ernst Mumenthaler won the competition for contemporary furniture with “3M Schrank”, Switzerland's first standardised and modular closet system, which was announced on the occasion of the “Das Neue Heim II” housing exhibition presented by what was then the Trade Museum Zurich and Winterthur and the Zurich chapter of the Swiss Werkbund.
In 1935, Elisabeth Bernasconi further developed the closet into the “Drei-Kantstabil-Schrank Typ 1”. Due to the time's economic crisis and the lack of materials, the closet's solid backboards were replaced by a more lightweight construction: The frame was made of triangular wood strips and planked with plywood, and the shelves were also made of plywood. This allowed the use of less material and reduced weight, while maintaining maximum stability.
